Social workers are incredible π
We work with the most marginalized populations on this planet. Some of us work with those that are homeless, while others work in hospitals or in hospices with those that are taking their last breath. Yet others still work in government agencies and advocate for legislation that can help those that are vulnerable and often overlooked.
The Social Work Newsletter was created for us. Itβs an email newsletter for social workers that provides a comprehensive weekly summary of social work news, research, and policy changes.
Why was the Social Work Newsletter created?
Thatβs a bit of a story. And that story begins with another email newsletter.
Over the past 3 years, we have been consistently reading the Morning Brew, a daily newsletter about business and technology. The Morning Brew was started by two University of Michigan college students in an effort to make business news more interesting for young people. Today, that newsletter has millions of subscribers.
Yet according to our research, a similar newsletter for social workers did not exist. Although we found many newsletters for social workers, none were as concise, interesting, and informative as the Morning Brew was for business news.
As we started to think about this more, we began having conversations with our social work colleagues about how they stay up to date with the field. This led us to send out a short survey. Here are some of the aggregated responses:
How often do you read about social work happenings?
To be honest, the survey could have been designed better. Yet it did provide us with some important information. For example, we learned that many of our social work peers obtain their information about the field through newsletters and that the time spent on staying up to date in the field varied.
Over time, we decided to create a newsletter around the vision that we had in our minds. We hope you enjoy the newsletter! And please let us know if you have any feedback.
Cheers!
