FAQ: Transitioning from social work into tech & startups
Answers to commonly-asked questions
What jobs are available to social workers?
Technically, social workers can get into every job in tech and startups. However, some jobs will require further training and experience. For example, it may be very difficult to find a job as a software engineer or product manager if you don’t have the experience or education.
The better question is what roles can social workers naturally transition into? Which roles allow us to transfer our natural skillsets?
Sales
Account management
Consulting
Human Resources
Recruiting
Clinical outcomes / quality control
Do I need a clinical license?
It depends on the job. If you are doing clinical work, then the answer is “probably”. For example, if you are consulting at a startup aboout clinical outcomes, then a license will be necessary.
However, it is not a requirement for many jobs. For example, if you are transitioning into sales or account management, it may be beneficial, but probably not necessary.
